At Her Farm Her Story, we are committed to breaking barriers for women in agriculture by providing them with access to land, financial independence, and market opportunities. One of our most impactful activities under this initiative is the Malkia wa Shamba Simulation, a hands-on exercise designed to illustrate the importance of land ownership and financial control for women farmers.

Activity Overview

The Malkia wa Shamba Simulation was conducted in Ifakara, Mtwara, and Mbeya, bringing together 75 women farmers to experience firsthand the challenges and solutions surrounding land ownership and market access. This interactive session helped women understand the power of securing their own farmland through our Lease-to-Own Model and how direct market access can transform their financial independence.

How the Activity Worked

Participants were divided into three groups, each representing different land access scenarios:

  1. Women with Secure Land Ownership – Farmers leasing land under our Malkia wa Shamba model, making structured payments toward full ownership.
  2. Women Renting Land Without Ownership Rights – Farmers working on borrowed land with uncertain long-term security.
  3. Women Farming on Family-Owned Land – Farmers contributing labor but lacking control over income, as earnings were managed by male relatives.

Each group was given “farm income” tokens based on their harvest, and they engaged in a market simulation where they negotiated prices, faced challenges with intermediaries, and explored direct sales opportunities through MazaoHub’s Farmer ERP Module.

Key Outcomes & Impact

Through this simulation, women farmers gained valuable insights into:
The financial stability that comes with land ownership
The risks of farming without secure land rights
The importance of accessing fair markets and receiving direct payments

By the end of the session, participants expressed their eagerness to join our Lease-to-Own Model, ensuring they not only cultivate land but also own it within six farming seasons. This initiative is already transforming lives—95 acres of land have been secured for women farmers, setting them on the path to true financial independence.

Scaling the Impact

Building on the success of this activity, we aim to expand Malkia wa Shamba across all 15 regions where our Farmer Excellence Centers (FECs) operate. By scaling this initiative, we are ensuring that more women farmers gain the tools, resources, and support they need to break free from dependency and build sustainable agribusinesses.

At Her Farm Her Story, we don’t just talk about change—we make it happen. Join us in redefining the future of women in agriculture.
